The Mirador del Río is an architectural and geographic landmark situated at the northernmost tip of Lanzarote, integrated into the 475-meter-high cliffs of the Risco de Famara. Originally a 19th-century military battery, the site was transformed in 1973 by artist César Manrique, who camouflaged the structure within volcanic rock to preserve the natural silhouette of the coastline. The interior features large, concave glass windows and winding white corridors designed to frame the maritime landscape while shielding visitors from high-velocity winds. This design effectively blurs the line between the built environment and the Atlantic horizon, turning the former fortification into a contemplative sanctuary.

Geographically, the site occupies a unique position where the high-altitude volcanic plateau terminates in a dramatic escarpment overlooking the Chinijo Archipelago. The viewpoint provides a panoramic perspective of La Graciosa and the uninhabited islands of Montaña Clara and Alegranza. This region is characterized by the Famara massif’s vertical relief and a microclimate shaped by moisture-laden trade winds, which support rare endemic flora along the cliff faces. The positioning of the lookout allows for an unobstructed view of the narrow strait, known as El Río, which historically served as a vital maritime passage for the Canary Islands.
