Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is a massive, 1.87-million-acre wilderness in Southern Utah. Often described as a ’giant outdoor laboratory’, it is famous for its remote beauty, complex geology, and rich fossil records. Located in the southwest, it consists of a series of giant ’steps’ of multicolored cliffs — from the Chocolate and Vermilion Cliffs at the bottom to the White Cliffs at the top. This area contains the most extensive network of slot canyons in Utah. The Grand Staircase region is the namesake of the monument and forms its southwestern corner, stretching between the towns of Kanab and Page. Geologically, it is a massive sequence of sedimentary rock layers that ’step’ upward toward Bryce Canyon, covering roughly 200 million years of Earth’s history. It’s a fantastic destination for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those interested in hiking and cycling.
