Adige Valley from Rovereto
Rolling south from Rovereto, the SS12 traverses the Vallagarina, a historic bottleneck known as the Terra dei Forti (Land of Forts). This stretch was the high-stakes frontier where the Austro-Hungarian Empire once faced the Kingdom of Italy, marked by the dramatic Castello di Avio perched high on the cliffs. While the SS12 is a main artery, cyclists often opt for the parallel Adige Cycle Path, a flat, high-speed "bicycle highway" that carves through dense Marzemino vineyards and is flanked by towering limestone walls. The valley eventually tightens at the Chiusa di Verona, a narrow gorge where Napoleon secured a map-changing victory at the 1797 Battle of Rivoli. Emerging from this gap, the Alpine air softens into the warmth of the Po Plain as you cross the historic border at Borghetto sull’Adige. This ride is a literal transition between worlds, following the ancient Via Claudia Augusta from the rugged Trentino mountains into the sun-drenched landscape of the Veneto.
