Piancavallo

Piancavallo is a ski resort in the Dolomites of northern Italy. Piancavallo is situated at 1,280 metres above sea level, at the foot of Monte Cavallo (2,251 m). Piancavallo was created in the late 1960s, and was the first Italian ski resort with snowmaking facilities. This is the climb where the great Marco Pantani began his climb to victory in the pink jersey of the 1998 Giro d’Italia! Since that historic date, it has been included in the Giro d’Italia three more times (2017, 2020, and 2022). Starting at the junction with the Provincial Road SP 29 on the edge of Aviano (altitude 158 metres), the route covers 14 kilometres with an average gradient approaching 8%. The first 6 kilometres are the most challenging, with a gradient of 9% and a peak at 13% between the 5th and 6th kilometres. The central part of the climb maintains significant gradients, while it tends to level off at the end.
